As Public Relations professionals, we are often challenged with the need to cut through the communication clutter by delivering clear, targeted messages and being intentional about audience selection.
However, many times — the 'unlikely', 'unexpected' or 'seemingly' ordinary content receives more reach, visibility and public interest compared to certain highly rated content.
This I say out of experience — having interfaced with over 100 brands, each presenting a unique challenge: delivering the right message to the right audience while driving deep understanding and meaningful connection.
A few reflections:
• Probing is key: Communicators, PR professionals and even marketers should often go back to the drawing board to understand why some messages/content becomes viral or stay top of mind, while others, despite massive investment, remain unnoticed and fade into the background.
• Repetition drives impact: Delivering consistent messages across multiple communication channels creates stronger connection points, reaching audiences in ways a single platform alone cannot.
• Emotional storytelling matters: By embracing emotional storytelling and messaging, beyond standard business pictorials and press releases or advertorials, we create more meaningful and authentically trusted connections with audiences.
• One size doesn't fit all: There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Messages must be tailored and personalized. Leveraging credible data, research insights, and statistics strengthens narratives and enhances believability for the brands we represent.
• Benchmarking over copying: While it's tempting to replicate successful campaigns, the goal should be to benchmark and repurpose — not copy and paste. Originality still matters.
• Think before AI: Taking time to think, research, and build a strong case before consulting AI often leads to more relevant, impactful messaging. AI should elevate ideas, not replace the thinking behind them.
• Grassroot relevance matters: Crafting messages that resonate with the everyday realities of your audience drives stronger understanding, relatability, and buy-in.
At its core, effective communication today goes beyond mere message circulation — it's about relevance, authenticity, understanding and meaningful connection derived out of awareness and visibility.
